The very first production under Shakespeare Demystified (SD) was Julius Caesar in 2011.
The format was inspired by Australian director Jeff Kevin, who was invited by the Australian High Commission and klpac to conduct a workshop in 2009. The following year he directed A Midsummer Night's Dream with some of the participants.
A number of SD members took part on both occasions, and learned how Shakespeare’s works can be presented in a simple way, yet capable of drawing the audience into a fantastic and compelling world.
The Actors Studio, klpac and penangpac, through their continuous and strong support, have played an important part in helping the group take shape and develop.
1. Accessible without dumbing down
Canonical speeches and scenes are performed in original Shakespearean English, while narration, in contemporary English, weaves the scenes together to provide context, character analyses and clarification of unfamiliar expressions.
2. Minimal Set Up
Using minimal set, props, lighting and even costume, we ask the audience:
'Let the words on "your imaginary forces" work.'
3. A Small Production Team
Actors not only take up two or more roles in play, but also take part in other production aspects.
All these make our shows ideal for travelling to schools, colleges and universities!
